Football, a sport that almost defines America. However, it’s not only a good pastime, for professional NFL players it’s an extremely lucrative job. Some NFL players earn tens of millions of dollars in a single year. So, here is the top ten highest paid players in the NFL.

1. Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers is an American football quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. He was born on December 8, 1981 and is currently 34. Again, like Cam Newton, his salary isn’t exactly the highest on this list, only being 15 million dollars. That being said, he got a 22.5 million dollar signing bonus. That means he earned about 37.5 million dollars next year, 6.5 million more than Cam Newton. This makes Philip Rivers one of the highest paid players in the entire NFL.

2. Cam Newton

Cameron Newton, better known as Cam Newton, is an American football quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. He was born on May 11, 1989 and is currently 27. Surprisingly, Cam Newton has a fairly small salary, only a million dollar, but that doesn’t include his signing and roster bonus. His signing bonus is 22.5 million dollars, while his roster bonus is 7.5 million dollars. If you add this all up, it means Cam Newton made approximately 31 million dollars in 2015, 7.5 million dollars more than Matt Ryan. This is an astounding amount, but Cam Newton is still only number two.

Matthew Ryan, better known as Matt Ryan, is an American football quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. He was born on May 17, 1985 and is currently 31 years old. Last year he managed to earn 23.5 million dollars, a little less than half of which was salary. The other half was 12 million dollar signing bonus, which pushed his 11.5 million dollar salary, to his 23.5 million. Well some might call this amount of money excessive, it’s still much less than the next two NFL player son this list, who manage to put Matt Ryan’s 23.5 million dollars to shame.

4. Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler is an American Football quarterback for the Chicago Bears. He was born on April 29, 1983 and is currently 33 years old. Jay Cutler made quite a bit of money back in 2015,earning 20.5 million dollars. However, similarly to Tony Romo, not all of his money came from his salary. Only 15.5 million dollars of his earnings last year came from his salary, the other 5 million was from a restructure bonus. 

5. Drew Brees

Similarly to Eli Manning, most of Drew Brees money in 2015 came from his salary. His 2015 salary was 18.5 million dollars, with a 500,000 dollar workout bonus. This puts his total 2015 earning sat approximately 19 million dollars. This is a whole lot more than many actors make and is far more than anyone could earn with any conventional job.

Unlike the last two players on this list, most of Eli Manning’s earnings come straight from his salary. Eli Manning earned 17.5 million dollars in 2015, 500,000 of which was a workout bonus. That’s enough to buy five Bugatti Chirons and still be left a multi-millionaire. That being said, Eli Manning’s number six for a reason, he may make millions, but he also makes millions less than other players in the NFL.

7. Tony Romo

Tony Romo, like Cameron Heyward, has a million dollar salary, however where he gets the rest of his money is a bit difference. In 2015 Tony Romo earned a total of 17 million dollars, however 16 million of that was from a restructure bonus. That being said, it’s still a substantial amount of money, it’s more than most average Americans will make in their lifetime.

His salary is actually extremely small compared to most others on this list, however it’s his signing and roster bonus that earned him big time in 2015. His salary was only a million dollars, but his signing bonus of 12 million dollars and his roster bonus of 3 million dollars turned that 1 million dollar salary into 16 million dollars.

9. Trent Williams

He has a similar salary to Rob Gronkowski, however he makes an additional 500,000 dollars due to a roster bonus. This puts Trent Williams 2015 earnings at 15.5 million dollars, with a 4.75 million dollar salary. However, Trent Williams's earnings will look more and more meager as this list continues for he doesn’t even make half of what some of the top players earn.

10. Rob Gronkowski

He may only be number ten on this list but don’t let that fool you, he makes more money than some people could hope for in their entire life. In 2015 he made 15 million dollars,two thirds of which was a partof the signing bonus. That doesn’t mean his salary isn’t good though, in 2015 he had a 4.75 million dollar salary.
